How to Fix & Reset Brake Override System Warning Light ON or Flashing (Brake Override Malfunction)

If your Brake Override light is ON, don’t ignore it.

Good news… you can usually fix this in minutes.

Now… start simple.
Look down at the driver’s floor… make sure the floor mat isn’t pressing the accelerator.
Sounds small… but it causes this a lot.

Next… press the brake pedal a few times…
Make sure it feels normal… not too hard, not too soft.
Now turn the ignition ON… don’t start the engine.
Press the brake… and check the rear brake lights.
If they don’t come on… or they stay on… that’s your issue.
Most of the time… it’s just the brake switch.

If that checks out… move to the battery.
Turn the car off… disconnect the negative terminal… wait 10 to 15 minutes…
Reconnect it… start the car… and see if the warning is gone.

Still there? Try this quick reset.
Ignition ON… press and hold the brake…
Gently press the accelerator for a couple seconds… release both…
Turn the car OFF… wait a few seconds… then start it again.

If the light keeps coming back… it’s usually a worn brake switch…
a dirty accelerator sensor… or a wiring issue.
So yeah… start with the basics… floor mat… brake lights… battery reset…
